16 projects selected for the RIBA International Awards for Excellence 2021
A major modern art museum in Shanghai and a new entrance building and visitor centre to the Museum Island in Berlin, a pedestrian and cycle bridge through the heart of Copenhagen, a beautiful artists’ home in Sri Lanka, a new hospital where the healing power of nature becomes a central element: these are just a few of the sixteen architectures selected for the RIBA International Awards for Excellence 2021, the important biennial awards handed out by the Royal Institute of British Architects. In November, the winner of the RIBA International Prize 2021 will be selected from these sixteen finalist projects.

JKMM: Hospital Nova in Jyväskylä, city of health
With the aim of putting the patient at the heart of the design, JKMM has created the Hospital Nova in Jyväskylä, following a new model for a healthcare environment and a new floor plan. A large atrium is the landing point for emergencies and provides access to all the various departments. Meanwhile, the in-patient wards are inspired by the concept of a hotel.

Renzo Piano designs a Pediatric Hospice among the treetops
A treehouse for finding relief amid the magic and natural beauty of the forest is the concept behind the pediatric hospice designed by architect Renzo Piano and his studio, RPBW, for the non-profit association Fondazione Hospice MariaTeresa Chiantore Seràgnoli Onlus. The complex is currently under construction in Bologna, next to Bellaria Hospital, and by 2022 it will be ready to become a Regional Reference Centre for Pediatric Palliative Care in the Region of Emilia Romagna.

De Kovel Architecten & Studio AAAN: Hospice de Liefde, Rotterdam
De Kapel, the complex located in Rotterdam and protected as a national monument, has become the home of Hospice de Liefde, a centre for the care of terminally ill patients. Commissioned by Stichting Volkskracht Historical Monuments, De Kovel and Studio AAAN renovated and extended the 18th-century farmhouse.

Vaillo+Irigaray: Expansion of a psychiatric centre in Pamplona
San Francisco Javier Psychiatric Centre’s traditional nineteenth-century hospital layout in Pamplona has been expanded with a new architectural unit in Vaillo+Irigaray’s restoration and expansion project. Vaillo+Irigaray maintain the building’s scale and formal lines while innovating with its structures, combining concrete and glass.
