Friendship Hospital in Bangladesh wins the RIBA International Prize 2021

The winners of RIBA’s biennial international awards have been announced. Friendship Hospital, designed by architect Kashef Mahboob Chowdhury and his studio URBANA in Bangladesh, is the winner of the RIBA International Prize 2021. The RIBA International Emerging Architect 2021 is awarded to Hooba Design Group for the Kohan Ceram Central Office Building in Iran.

A "scandalously beautiful hospital" is how the late Italian surgeon and philanthropist Gino Strada, who passed away in the summer of 2021, described the request he submitted to architect Renzo Piano for the design of a new medical facility in Uganda: the Children’s Surgical Hospital in Entebbe, a virtuous example of good architecture, cooperation and co-design that opened in April 2021.

A joint project between the Urbánika architecture studio with Acento Colectivo and Plan Proyecto for the realisation of the Regional Centre for Autism Care (CRIAA) in Ciudad Camargo, in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico. The Centre is located inside a childrenâ's park, incorporating some of the existing trees to encourage dialogue between its young users and nature.

The finalists for the RIBA International Prize 2021

It’s time for the prestigious biennial award presented by the Royal Institute of British Architects to built projects all over the world: the three finalists in the 2021 edition were announced on November 16. The projects competing for the RIBA International Prize 2021 are Friendship Hospital in Satkhira, Bangladesh, by Kashef Chowdhury/URBANA; James-Simon-Galerie in Berlin, Germany, by David Chipperfield Architects Berlin; and Lille Langebro cycling and pedestrian bridge in Copenhagen, Denmark, by WilkinsonEyre and Urban Agency.

The new Integrated Day Centre in Nembro is the work of Remo Capitanio

Architect Remo Capitanio, in collaboration with Joi Donati and Alice Bottelli, has headed up the expansion of the Integrated Day Centre in Nembro in the province of Bergamo, Italy. The assisted living facility is a contemporary architectural project with a careful eye not only for the quality of its spaces and welcoming atmosphere, but also the historical context of its setting. As such, traditional materials have been used so as to strike up a dialogue with the nearby Chiesa di San Nicola. The Nembro Day Centre is a project which aims to provide an indispensable contribution to the health and welfare services of one of the places in Italy worst affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

A major modern art museum in Shanghai and a new entrance building and visitor centre to the Museum Island in Berlin, a pedestrian and cycle bridge through the heart of Copenhagen, a beautiful artists’ home in Sri Lanka, a new hospital where the healing power of nature becomes a central element: these are just a few of the sixteen architectures selected for the RIBA International Awards for Excellence 2021, the important biennial awards handed out by the Royal Institute of British Architects. In November, the winner of the RIBA International Prize 2021 will be selected from these sixteen finalist projects.
