Farewell to Meinhard von Gerkan of gmp

gmp founding partner Meinhard von Gerkan passed away in Hamburg at the age of 87 on 30 November 2022. One of Germany’s most influential architect and university professors, he designed buildings all over the world for more than fifty years with gmp, the practice he founded with Volkwin Marg in 1965.

Chinese Traditional Culture Museum in Beijing by gmp

The new national museum was built at the northern end of Beijing's central axis and, for the first time, will display important art and craft collections that are part of the country's great cultural heritage.

gmp designs Stade de Luxembourg sports stadium with strong visual identity

The Stade de Luxembourg designed by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp studio) opened its doors to sports fans in autumn 2021. The architects faced a number of major challenges in designing Luxembourg's new stadium, including being able to recreate the atmosphere of a large football arena even with a small sports facility with a capacity of only 9,900 seats, thus far from the standards of large international stadiums. The strong visual identity of the stadium reflects the building's architecture with its striking façade.

In 2009 gmp Architekten von Gerkan, Marg und Partner won an international design contest for a new museum in the Chinese city of Zhuhai. The project was recently completed, and the city, which has already risen to popularity as one of China’s top tourist destinations over the past forty years, can now boast a new cultural attraction.

Opening of BER, Berlin’s new airport by gmp

Berlin’s new Brandenburg Airport (BER) was built to the designs of renowned German architecture firm gmp. At the time coined “Europe’s most modern airport”, it opened on 31 October 2020 with a delay of almost ten years.

The Alter Wall 2-32 renovation project by gmp von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects brings new life to central Hamburg. Historic buildings have been renovated to give the city new spaces and pedestrian zones, while uncovering and revealing architectural elements that had been hidden as the buildings were changed over the years.

gmp completes Silk Road International Conference Center in Xi'an

The new conference center, designed by gmp architects practice, was completed at the end of July in Xi’an. More than 3100 years old, this ancient Chinese city is located at the easternmost point of the ancient Silk Road. The practice founded by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners won the 2017 competition to design the conference center which, together with their design for a dedicated Silk Road exhibition center, form a trade and industry hub in the province of Shaanxi.

Gmp Concert hall Kulturpalast Dresden

The concert hall in the palace of culture in Dresden, home to the city’s philharmonic orchestra, reopened on April 28. The renovation project by von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) also encompasses the city’s central library and the Herkuleskeule Cabaret.
