Murakaji: architecture and landscape in Irimote

The winners of the second international Next Landmark contest, held by Floornature to draw attention to the work of young architects all over the world, are Shoko and Naoto Murakaji, whose residential building on the Japanese island of Irimote interacts with the landscape around it. Materials have been chosen carefully to respond to the demands of the location, and the form of the construction ensures that the building’s natural surroundings can communicate with it.

Takeshi Hosaka: 60 m2 home made of earth in Yokohama

Takeshi Hosaka’s recent projects, such as his Yokohama house on a 60 m2 lot, demonstrate the ability of his architecture to meet people’s everyday needs, which determine the form, materials and design of the project. What is truly innovative about Hosaka’s project is that it transforms a two-level house into a three-level one, optimising use of the basement and increasing the amount of indoor space that benefits from sunlight.

Halo Architects: Sami Cultural Centre in Inari (Finland)

An expression of the Sami people, the cultural centre in Inari, Finland, designed by Halo Architects, has an organic shape that fits into the landscape with respect. This contemporary work of architecture is adapted to the landscape thanks to a layout of complex design which takes into account the presence of the old trees and the glass façade with handcrafted wooden cladding.

Ignatov Architects: new offices constructed on the historical building

The historical, heritage protected architecture of a warehouse in the centre of Varna, Bulgaria, has driven Ignatov Architects to design a new structure that blends in with the existing building. The architects constructed the top floor offices, setting up an interesting dialogue between the ruins and the new building. The project materials – old stone, glass and aluminium – create strong visual contrasts in the city’s new landmark.
