BIG (Bjarke Ingels): Danish National Maritime Museum

The Danish National Maritime Museum completed recently in Helsingør is a contemporary architecture project by an international team including Bjarke Ingels (BIG), Rambøll, Kossmann.dejong and KiBiSi. Six years of work went into this project celebrating Denmark’s seafaring tradition, a museum leading the way in redevelopment of the docks near Kronborg Castle to give the city a new meeting-place and landmark.

GPY arquitectos: SEGAI Research Centre in Tenerife

Designed to be an architectural symbol, the SEGAI Research Centre in Tenerife, by GPY arquitectos of Span, is inspired by the landscape around it, amidst the farmland of the Faculty of Agriculture of La Laguna University. The materials employed in the project complete one another, combining strength with light weight.

Zaha Hadid: Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku

The Heydar Aliyev Center in new Baku is one of Zaha Hadid’s boldest and most amazing projects. It makes a strong mark on the city and optimises use of the vast size and great complexity of its site, a hill in the urban area of the capital of Azerbaijan. The plastic form of a building designed to be photographed is silhouetted at the top of the hill. The materials used to make the panels covering the building also become the pavement of the plaza outside it, creating semi-public spaces where people can stop and enjoy their city.

Shirish Beri: Laboratory for the Conservation of Endangered Species

Indian architect Shirish Beri designed the LaCONES, Laboratory for the Conservation of Endangered Species, in Hyderabad in central India. His compositional invention is a result of observation of the site, which is dominated by a group of big rocks. The theme of dialogue between the construction and its natural site is interwoven with the theme of sustainability.
