Arolat: housing complex in Istanbul

EEA-Emre Arolat Architects, one of the most interesting Turkish architectural practices around at the moment, recently completed an important residential project in Göktürk, north of Istanbul. Architect Daniel Fügenschuh won the competition for an expansion for a secondary school in the old town centre of Rattennberg, Austria, building a new wing which is connected to and continuous with the old building but stands out from it in terms of the architectural vocabulary used.

MPreis supermarkets stand out because they are commissioned from young architects in the Tyrol and designed not only to save money but to be environmentally sustainable, fit harmoniously into their surroundings and make use of innovative design features. The new supermarket and coffee shop in Wiesing designed by Daniel Fügenschuh is a good example.

TAO: new elementary school in Xiaoquan

Nine hundred children can attend the new elementary school in Xiaoquan, completed to plans by architect Hua Li thanks to private financial contributions for rebuilding the school after the 2008 earthquake. Local materials and building techniques are used in a work that fits into its surroundings, avoiding the international “post-seismic” style in favour of a form of architecture demonstrating respect for local history.

Gri e Zucchi: Music Centre in Cervignano

The Music Centre which opened on May 3, 2011 in Cervignano del Friuli (Udine) is the result of functional recovery of a former bus parking garage which had been unused for years. The original materials interact with the materials of contemporary architecture, confirming the site’s industrial vocation and transforming it into a cultural project.
