Inter Cities / Intra Cities: Ghostwriting the Future.
This collateral event at the 13th Venice Architecture Biennial is open until 25th November and focuses on the urban regeneration of Kowloon East, Hong Kong, one of the largest projects of its kind in Asia.

The exhibition is organised by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. The HKIA selected Hong Kong-based architectural practice, The Oval Partnership as curator following the public call for proposals to redevelop the 320-hectare former airport area in Kowloon East.

The curators, acting as “Ghostwriter” , selected thirteen exhibits, threading together real and speculative propositions from past, present and future. These exhibits consider both the official plans proposed by the Development Bureau as well as the unofficial, unplanned, locally generated activities in Kowloon East that fill the cracks and crevices in between.

The Biennial theme, “Common Ground” has added poignancy in Hong Kong due to the island’s geographic and political position. One country, two systems? How different is Hong Kong from China? These thoughts have an effect on the various exhibits.

So, the exhibition covers a series of interconnected stories – from the new cruise terminal designed by Foster and Partners, being built on the old Kai Tak airport runway, to the small urban agriculture projects on factory rooftops, from community housing projects sensitive to the needs of the inhabitants through to a live music venue in a disused warehouse.
