Doug Aitken at the SCHIRN Kunsthalle in Frankfurt An exhibition of the works of US multimedia artist, Doug Aitken takes up the entire exhibition area of the SCHIRN Kunsthalle in Frankfurt, and plays with the concepts of time, space and memory. From 9 July to 27 September, the retrospective at the SCHIRN offers visitors a full immersion in Aitken's fluid artistic world.

Californian Doug Aitken was born in 1968 and his artistic research is an exploration of our civilisation, dominated by speed and movement, which on the one hand gives hope and on the other is very frightening. His visually striking artworks create an artistic vortex that expands our perception of the world around us.

This reaching out into the contemporary world becomes a synesthetic journey to discover ourselves:  Aitken focuses on this union of the senses. Visitors to the SCHIRN Kunsthalle in Frankfurt am Main can enjoy the retrospective in all 1400 square metres of indoor and outdoor exhibition area because the museum has been handed over to the first retrospective by Doug Aitken in Europe, set up by the artist himself.

An exhibition where space and time are fluid concepts, an exhibition that shows the various stages in Doug Aitken's career with video installations and whole sculptures, as well as an audio installation created specifically for the outside area of the SCHIRN. So visitors get to experience SONG 1 (2012-15), black mirror (2011), migration (empire) (2008) – our favourite because it is all about being everywhere but nowhere, very appropriate in contemporary nomadism – to culminate in diamond sea from 1997, his first multi-channel video installation. Of course, everything is supplemented and set off by his sculptures.

On 11 July at 6 pm, Aitken will be participating in 'artist talk' at the Schirn Café and 12 July is the German premiere of the film “Station to Station” by Doug Aitken: a train journeys across North America with a changing community of artists, musicians and curators on board - an artistic delight that we will be exploring in more detail to our readers.
