SOM Urban Sequoia NOW presented at COP27
During COP27, the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference, being held until 18 November in Egypt, the SOM studio presented the Urban Sequoia NOW project, a skyscraper capable of absorbing carbon dioxide. The building is the result of a project that has been developed and refined over the past year, from the research work that the same architecture firm presented at COP26, the 2021 edition of the climate change conference.

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill Aerial Walkway for Seattle-Tacoma Airport
International passengers arriving at Seattle-Tacoma Airport in the United States will be greeted by a scenic and impressive overhead walkway designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM). A replacement for the previous structure built 50 years ago, the new walkway is certainly the most complex intervention at the airport in the last seventy years, and it offers a spectacular welcome to passengers arriving into the city.

SOM 800 Fulton Market: new ways of living and working in Chicago
800 Fulton Market, the tower block designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), represents a bridge between the past and the future for the Chicago district of the same name. The building, which has obtained a number of important sustainability certifications, is a mixed-use office tower about 100 metres tall, with seven landscaped terraces and an advanced building management system.

SOM designs Shenzhen Rural Commercial Bank Headquarters
In Shenzhen, in southeastern China, the headquarters of the Shenzhen Rural Commercial Bank, designed by the Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) architectural firm were recently completed. The building is a 158-metre-tall, 33-story tower built on the edge of a public park in one of the main commercial districts of the modern Chinese metropolis. To meet the comfort needs of the building’s indoor spaces – taking into consideration the warm tropical climate of this region – the architects adopted solutions that respect the principles of sustainability and biophilia.

SOM Skidmore, Owings & Merrill - Manhattan West renovates Far West Side in New York
Manhattan West, a complex of six mixed-use buildings designed in large part by the Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) studio and developed by Brookfield Properties was officially inaugurated on September 28. An adventure that originally began thirty years ago, the first development programme to transform the unused space located above the active railway lines, an essential point in the pedestrian paths that connect New York’s West Side, in fact goes back to 1990.

SOM presents plans for the Milano-Cortina 2026 Olympic Village
The Milano-Cortina 2026 Olympic Village for the 25th Winter Olympics will be designed by SOM Skidmore Owings & Merrill, as COIMA SGR and its partners Covivio and Prada Holding announced on 16 July 2021 at the end of the international design competition. Work on the new Olympic Village, due to become an important centre of interest and activity in the Porta Romana area, will be completed by July 2025.

CTBUH names Urban Habitat Award Excellence Projects
In preparation for the 2021 edition of the Tall + Urban Innovation Conference, set to take place online on May 18 to 20 of this year, the CTBUH (Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat) revealed the winning “excellence” projects in various categories of its prestigious awards. After the buildings have been categorised according to height, the new excellence winners are skyscrapers selected for the technological and construction aspects adopted, for their intended use or for the Urban Habitat category.

Winners of the 2021 AIANY Design Awards
AIA New York’s annual Design Awards program recognises outstanding architectural design by AIA New York members. This year’s jury met online to select the winners in four of the five categories: Architecture, Interiors, Projects, and Urban Design. No awards were given this year in the Sustainability category.
