The City and The Water Workshop University of Pisa “The City and The Water, Architecture arts and self-construction experiences for a new artisan area in Pietrasanta” is the title of the international workshop organised by DESTeC (Department of Energy, Systems, Territory and Construction Engineering) at the University of Pisa, the Municipality of Pietrasanta and the Centre of visual arts (CAV) in Pietrasanta.

“The City and The Water, Architecture arts and self-construction experiences for a new artisan area in Pietrasanta” is the title of the international workshop organised by DESTeC (Department of Energy, Systems, Territory and Construction Engineering) at the University of Pisa, the Municipality of Pietrasanta and the Centre of visual arts (CAV) in Pietrasanta, in collaboration with the “I 2 Luoghi” art laboratory.

The goal of the workshop is to come up with ideas to upgrade the artisan area of the Due Laghi (Pietrasanta) and its surrounding nature. This is a very significant environment formed of two manmade lakes deriving from a former clay quarry and by the wooded hills around them.  With Livegreenblog we have already visited the area, and it is the perfect place to put into practice some self-construction techniques, an architectural trend that is on the up-and-up as a practical approach to a lack of funds and resources.

Applications for the September workshop will be published shortly, and one of the professors is Spanish architect Santiago Cigureda from the collective Recetas Urbanas, renowned for the self-built constructions with local communities for social purposes, which Al Jazeera English showcased in the first episode of its 2014 TV series “Guerrilla Architect”.

Livegreenblog and Floornature will be keeping a close eye on the workshop and the concluding exhibition in September, and we will be meeting the organisers, and Santiago Cigureda at 2 Luoghi on the first visit. We will also be sitting in on his keynote lecture “Autocostruzione, Recupero e riqualificazione urbana” (Self-construction, recovery and urban development) on 12 March 2015 at the Engineering faculty in Pisa. Stay tuned for more news!

We'd like to share with our readers some of the photos of 2 Luoghi after the windstorm that struck Tuscany, and Pietrasanta, on the night of 5 March. Some of the workshops were seriously damaged. We really hope these businesses can get back on their feet as soon as possible and we'll let you know how you can express your solidarity or give them a helping hand.
