Genesis lectures, waiting for Ricardo Bak Gordon In the run-up to the 29 April lecture in Pisa by Portuguese architect Ricardo Bak Gordon, we relive the excitement of the opening of the cycle with Tony Fretton through the cartoon strip created by Alice Milani.

While waiting for the third lecture in the Genesis series, the initiative of students and professors of the Architectural Engineering course of the  Engineering School - University of Pisa that explores the genesis of an architectural project, let's look at the first event from a different angle - the magical cartoons of Alice Milani.

To the question of how to creatively and really engagingly communicate an architecture lecture, the scientific committee with Lorenzo Cianciarini and Brunello Favilla responded by inviting Alice Milani. This talented cartoonist used her pencils and a few concise words to convey the essence of the afternoon in Pisa with British architect Tony FrettonAlice Milani is an illustrator and cartoonist from Pisa, and a member of La Trama; this artistic collective was founded in 2009 and includes about ten people, five of them are founding members and the others are cartoonists and/or illustrators who collaborate with them on a case by case basis.

The tribute to the great dame of architecture, Zaha Hadid, who died on 31 March 2016 - the first day of the event in Pisa - introduces us to the visual narrative of the actual lecture.
Alice Milani uses minimal brush strokes to recreate the atmosphere in the room and more importantly to convey the design concept pursued by Fretton through her vision of the buildings presented by the architect, which are all distinguished by square lines and pure forms.

The expressive power of the hand-drawn pictures means that only a few words are needed to help the reader/viewer understand, for example the difference between art and architecture that Tony Fretton explained through his work with artist Anish Kapoor: we look at art but we do not use it, while architecture must be the background of people's lives and it has to become an active part of our lives.

A major responsibility for architecture students, a challenge to be proud of and all of this was conveyed perfectly and uniquely in Alice Milani's artwork.
