- Contact, an exhibition by Olafur Eliasson at Fondation Louis Vuitton
Denmark’s Olafur Eliasson sees art as a fundamental medium to turn ideas into action. His installations and artworks always strive to engage visitors, who in turn become part of the art itself, by contributing their experience.
This is again the case with “Contact”, which you can visit at Fondation Louis Vuitton, the Frank Gehry-designed building recently inaugurated in Paris.
Olafur Eliasson’s exhibition is offered up in stages, each one leading to the next through chambers and passageways, feeding the senses with lights and wonder, investigating how we perceive, conceive and construct space, and driving us to explore our inner selves.
The sound installation by Samuel Losminen and Olafur Eliasson is based on the actual sounds visitors hear in the room and – through digital control developed for the purpose – offers a dance of light and shadows that follows the progress of the sun as much as the building itself: a visit to Olafur Eliasson’s exhibition gives us an opportunity to see Gehry’s new iconic building – the container – and also to delve inside our inner selves.
“Contact” by Olafur Eliasson combines the grand themes of creation with our personal universe, bringing to mind the words of R.W. Emerson: “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”
