The strong contrast between the artificial and the natural represents an attempt to create something unique despite the degradation of the city around it.

Neutelings Riedijk: Aan De Stroom Museum

As part of the project for renewal of the ancient Eilandje district, where many well-known architectural studios have been working recently, such as David Chipperfield’s studio, the architects of Neutelings Riedijk have built the city’s new museum of history overlooking the Schelda River, where the vocabulary of the materials dematerialises the tower volume and makes it stand out against the constructions of the harbour as a new landmark for the city.

Inaugurated on June 25 2011, Cité de l’Océan et du Surf was built around the symbols of the sea and sports that make Biarritz the top tourist destination in Basque France. Competition winner Steven Holl uses the shape of the coastline as his starting point for creation of an underground museum, the roof of which becomes a plaza from which to admire the ocean.

Giancarlo Mazzanti and Felipe Mesa have built a community centre in Medellin, Colombia which fits into a series of works sharing the common theme of a focus on social value, on the life of the city and the integration of its people. Characterised by varied repetition of a pattern, the roof is a symbol of the creative standardisation apparent in the two architects’ recent projects.

BP: duplex homes in Paris

In 2011 an eight-level apartment building was constructed in Place de la Bastille in Paris, designed by BP Architecture. The project is characterised by the façades: the wall over the square is a glass sunshade, while the side walls are made of modular panels with variable inclinations and coloured inserts.
