The gmpstudio of architectsvon Gerkan, Marg and Partners has designed a new building for the Deutsche Oper am Rhein ballet company inDüsseldorf inaugurated on 4th September 2015.
The new building will house the company's 50 professional dancers and students, who will have two dance studios as well as changing rooms, bathrooms and physiotherapy rooms, with an apartment for guest artists.
The building was created on the historic site of an ex-depot of the Rheinbahn, the Düsseldorf transport company, and is a compact building located between the old tram depot and the Kopernikusstrasse residential complex.
The gmp architects designed a building that deliberately echoes the industrial character of the surroundings in its materials and style, but is separated from the heterogeneous panorama of the nearby residential complex. Inside the walls have been left in bare concrete with minimalist colours.
The building appears as something deliberately unfinished, an experimental and creative space in continual development.
