Dubai (the United Arab Emirates) was chosen over the other candidate cities for Expo 2020: San Paolo (Brazil), Smyrne (Turkey) and Ekaterinburg (Russia). The choice was announced on November 27 after voting held during the General Assembly of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE).
The theme of the World’s Fair will be "Connecting minds, Creating the future", a celebration of global development based on three principles: mobility, sustainability and opportunity. According to the project presented for the city’s candidacy, the Expo will be held in Jebel Ali, a 438 hectare area between Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
Giuseppe Sala, Single Commissioner Delegated for Expo Milano 2015, congratulated the Dubai delegation and emphasised that the theme of Expo 2020 will be an ideal completion of the project underway for Expo Milano 2015, and the foundations exist for creating between the two events "a very strong and profitable relationship marking a milestone of growth and success for future Expos".
