RIBA National Award 2012. Glenariffe House, McGarry-Moon. An area of outstanding natural beauty, the Glens of Antrim in Northern Ireland provides the setting for this single occupancy dwelling designed by McGarry-Moon from Kilrea. Their project has won the RIBA National Award 2012 and RSUA Design Award 2012 – Residential.

The desire for a home that meets the needs of modern life can be a perfect counterpart for contemporary architecture, without spoiling the natural surroundings. McGarry-Moon's multi-award winning project for Glenariffe House in Northern Ireland is proof positive of this.

The building follows the natural progression of the site, providing breathtaking views as well as protection from the often inclement weather.

The architects have skilfully exploited the site’s natural geological formations to effortlessly merge this manmade structure with the natural contours of the land.

They adopted the idea of the traditional vernacular, but stopped short of imitating its forms. The architects at McGarry-Moon have designed a 21st century rural home that incorporates new, sustainable technology. They used traditional materials: stone, natural slate and white render are all restyled and used in conjunction with glass. The interior ebbs and flows to make the most of the sightlines.

For those of you who’d like to find out more about the lively panorama of young British and Irish architecture practices, McGarry-Moon Architects have organised “Connecting Terroritories”, a show at the Obel Tower, Belfast taking place from 30th November to 9th December.
