Exhibition. David Adjaye: Form, Heft, Material The exhibition, “David Adjaye: Form, Heft, Material” at the Haus der Kunst in Munich, in collaboration with The Art Institute of Chicago showcases the heterogeneous work of the Ghanaian-British architect, exploring more than 30 projects, including museums and private homes.

David Adjaye, born in 1966, Ghanaian-British architect, lays claim to more than 50 built projects. From his early private homes, often designed for and with artist friends, through to major contracts like the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C. or the National Museum of Slavery and Freedom in Cape Coast, Ghana, David Adjaye’s work is extremely varied as he responds to the architectural needs of the moment.

While his private homes are designed as retreats from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, his public buildings actually seek out engagement and interaction with users.
Still, despite their bold appearance, they’re not just designed to be functional icons in the urban context, the intention is to leave a real mark, opening to the ideas of the people who actually live in these areas also thanks to the choice of building materials, that make you want to physically touch the building.

The exhibition organised by Haus der Kunst with The Art Institute of Chicago is the biggest retrospective of David Adjaye’s work ever showcased. It is open from 30 January to 31 May 2015 and in addition to the catalogue, also includes a schedule of seminars and lectures, some held directly by the architect himself.
