Best of Green Hotels: our pick.

Over the months we have had occasion to present a number of hotels that have struck us with their green concept. What better occasion than the summer holidays for a truly sustainable vacation?

If you love exotic destinations, the best resort to choose might be Alila Villas Uluwatu in Bali, Indonesia, designed by WoHa. The complex draws on the rich culture and traditions of Bali, and has been designed to minimise its long-term ecological “footprint” on the basis of ”Environmentally Sustainable Design” (ESD) guidelines; it also has EarthCheck social sustainability certification.

Another exotic destination is Matali Crasset’s Dar-Hi in Tunisia. Like all HI hotels, it assigns a primary role to the environment, accompanied by the French architect and designer’s practical, contemporary design.

How about a city break in Vienna at the Boutiquehotel Stadthalle, the world’s first city centre hotel with an energy balance of zero and a European environmental quality award. If you come by train you will be offered a special discount on the price of your room.

In Barcelona, enjoy a sustainable vacation at the Hotel Ayre Rosselón by Wortmann Architects with views of Gaudí’s Sagrada Familia.

If you would like to spend your holidays in Italy, Daniel Kihlgren offers his Sextantio open hotel concept supporting minor local history in places of rare beauty in Abruzzo and Matera.

Young people can enjoy an inexpensive holiday in Hamburg, Germany at the Superbude hostel. Or choose the Baumgeflüster treehotel designed by Andreas Wenning.
