The masterplan for Superkilen by the team of architects led by BIG has won the 2013 National Honor Award of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

BIG + Topotek1 + Superflex, Superkilen Masterplan
A vacant space a mile long running right through a district in Copenhagen characterised by great social and ethnic diversity has been transformed by the team of architects including BIG + Topotek1 + Superflex into an artificial "urban space".
Superkilen brings together urban "objects" from the different cultures of the people living in the area: street furnishings and games from 60 different countries, with a steel plaque near each explaining its origin.

The team of designers from BIG architectural studios, Topotek1 landscape architects and artists from the Superflex group divided up the area into three zones, each identified by a different colour: green, black and red. Surfaces, colours and plants form dynamic settings for street furnishings in each zone.
The project has been presented with the 2013 National Honor Award of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). The judges called the project "a joy" because of the energy it conveys, its interesting approach to today?s multicultural society and the way the local people were involved in the project.
