The tenth Next Landmark International Award gets underway in 2021

Iris Ceramica Group, Award, NextLandmark,

“Functional mixing: new links between architecture and inclusive and sustainable urban spaces” is the title of the tenth edition of the international Next Landmark contest promoted by Floornature, the architecture and design magazine published by the Iris Ceramica Group. With a formula renewed every year to adapt to the needs of the day, in its tenth year the Next Landmark International Award invites submissions in a contest for selection of two winning projects focusing on sustainable functional mixing: one built project and one study project.

2021 marks a milestone for Next Landmark, the international contest promoted by Floornature, the architecture and design magazine published by the Iris Ceramica Group, which celebrates its tenth birthday this year. Ever since the first edition was held in 2012, the Next Landmark contest has focused on inspiration from the world of architecture, renewing its formula year after year without losing sight of the key concept: focusing visibility and public attention on new research and projects by the new generation of architects and designers, promoting discussion of new proposals and visions for contemporary living.
This commitment is renewed for the tenth edition of the contest, entitled “Functional mixing: new links between architecture and inclusive and sustainable urban spaces”. Candidates are asked to present proposals for a possible, concretely feasible future centring around the concepts of inclusiveness and respect for both people and nature, in which public and private urban space is interpreted as an "economic and environmental opportunity, a chance to consolidate the collective sense of belonging". The types of project that may be submitted range from urban regeneration projects in which constructions that once had an industrial function are converted for use by service providers and the non-profit sector through new ways of using space on the urban and architectural scale, or architecture for different functions (residential, commercial, infrastructure, leisure, etc.) which fit into the contemporary city to create networks of proximity and new forms of sustainable growth for the city itself. Public or private projects implementing nature-based solutions (NBS) may also be submitted, meaning projects with a low long-term environmental impact in which human activities are integrated into the natural element in a sustainable way.
The competition takes the form of a “contest for ideas” with open, anonymous proceedings, open to all young designers and creative artists in the disciplines of architecture and design who graduated in or after the year 2010.
The contest includes two categories: the Landmark of the Year Award for a built project, and the Research Award, presented to a project which has not been built, but developed or produced as an academic study (such as a graduating thesis) or independently (such as research work).
Entrants may submit their work until May 30, 2021, and the judges will announce their decision on June 30. This year’s panel of judges includes Anna Bach (architect and co-founder of A&EB studio, Associate Professor all'EINA Centro Universitario de Diseño y Arte in Barcelona), Gisela Loehlein, (architect, head of the Department of Architecture at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University – XJTLU in Suzhou, Jiangsu, China), Federica Minozzi (CEO of the Iris Ceramica Group), Carlotta Zucchini (artistic director of architecture magazine THE PLAN), and Paolo Schianchi (architect and instructor at IUSVE, Istituto Universitario Salesiano di Venezia e Verona). The prize will be a trip to Venice, including travel and accommodations, to attend the International Architecture Exhibition at Biennale di Venezia, online promotion of the project in all the Group’s media, and an award certificate as winner of the 2021 NEXT LANDMARK INTERNATIONAL AWARD.
