The Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity and Urban Regeneration of Italy’s Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism has supported an initiative aimed at developing awareness of the importance of contemporary architecture among the public and promoting quality architecture to aid the country’s civil, social and economic progress: the "Architecture Festival" competition saw the selection of seven winning projects for seven events held in the month of September 2020.

Architecture Festival in Italy: the winning events

Beginning on September 4, seven different architecture-related events are to be held all over the Italian peninsula and islands. The seven projects were selected in the "Architecture Festivals" competition, an initiative of the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity and Urban Regeneration of the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, established to pursue three main goals: promoting awareness and appreciation of contemporary architecture; encouraging awareness of the cultural value of quality architecture and therefore demand for it among the public, in order to contribute to building a sustainable society; and developing an integrated approach to planning which employs innovative, inclusive processes to trigger urban regeneration projects that take into account environmental, cultural, urban and social sustainability.
49 different proposals from all over Italy were submitted for the competition, from which the following seven winners were selected:
- BiArch - Bari International Archifestival (City of Bari);
- Change - Architecture Cities Life (Associazione OCR Open City Roma)
- Design for the Next Community (City of Ivrea);
- SI Arch Fest - South Italy Architecture Festival (FCP Farm Cultural Park, a cultural centre);
- 2050 ArchiFest - Abitare il mondo altrimenti (City of Colle Val d’Elsa);
- Rigenera (Order of Architects, Planners, Landscape Architects and Conservationists of Reggio Emilia);
- FAC 2020 I confini del cambiamento. Cagliari tra terra e acqua. Architettura e luoghi sensibili (“FAC 2020: The boundaries of change. Cagliari between earth and water. Sensitive architecture and places”, Cagliari University).

Initially scheduled for spring, the seven events had to be rescheduled for the autumn as a result of the medical emergency. The new schedule has also required major changes to the events to ensure compliance with the regulations for preventing the spread of Covid-19; many of the events are, for instance, being held both live and online.
The first of the seven events is the SI ARCH FEST South Italy Architecture Festival, opening on September 4 and continuing until September 19 in Favara (Agrigento) with the goal of re-establishing the role of architecture as a social catalyst, giving a boost to the local economy through good practice in the planning and use of public and private space.
From September 14 through October 18 it will be followed by Rigenera, a festival organised by the order of architects of the province of in Reggio Emilia with the goal of designing a city of the future that will be “more dense, versatile, beautiful, creative, circular, and for people”.
On the same dates, September 18 through 27, 2020, the FAC 2020 Festival Architettura Cagliari aims to develop demand for quality architecture among the community, while Design for the next community in Ivrea (TO) investigates the changes in the city’s architecture and urban planning.
September 24 marks the opening of 2050 ArchiFest Abitare il mondo altrimenti (Another way of living in the world), continuing until October 4, 2020 in Colle di Val d'Elsa (SI), drawing the public’s attention to the state of architecture in the town, and CHANGE Architecture Cities Life, in Rome until October 31, 2020, seeking a new balance between human demands and the planet’s ability to continue to respond to them without sacrificing biodiversity.
The last event in the series will be held from October 30 through November 18, 2020: BiArch Bari International Archifestival in Bari is a festival and workshop that aims to involve citizens and experts in a process of collective, transdisciplinary reflection on the relationship between architecture and the city”.
