Italo Rota has given Palermo back the sea. Since the second world war the city seemed to have forgotten its waterfront promenade, occupied first by the ruins of bombed-out buildings and then by a funfair. The redevelopment of the Foro Italico area was funded with money provided by the nation for the UN conference on international crime held in Palermo in 2000.
Julien De Smedt architects is at the centre of the group of designers now working on another important urban project after Copenhagen’s Islands Brygge Park in 2003. The opposite shore of the canal has been redeveloped with a walkway over the water equipped to host sports activities and outdoor events, with the aim of reconnecting the city centre with the port and revitalising what was historically an industrial area.
On November 13 the CNAPPC announced the winners of the prizes awarded at Festa dell'Architetto 2015. Vincenzo Latina was named Italian Architect of 2015, while studio demogo; was awarded the “ Raffaele Sirica Young Talent in Architecture Award for 2015”, and the spoon.city platform was named Young Professionals’ Start-up of the Year.
