In discovery of the work of Pritzker Prize winning architect Shigeru Ban

Seventh Japanese architect awarded the Pritzker Prize in 2014 An unusual but important itinerary to discover a different side of architecture. Shigeru Ban, winner of the 2014 Pritzker Prize for architecture, is known as the architect who works with cardboard, bamboo, cloth, recycled plastic and paper by-products and locally available materials. Shigeru Ban’s architecture is lightweight, and can be taken apart and taken elsewhere, primarily to house refugees, providing relief to innocent victims of civil wars and natural disasters. Innovation and empathy: architecture which is designed not to make a profit but to respond to humanitarian causes. In the words of Renzo Piano, who became the second Italian architect to receive a Pritzker Prize for architecture in 1998, “architecture is a service, an art that makes things we need”

Rho: a changing land

Rho: a changing land

Thomas Pagani puts his education in Environmental Sciences to work to lay bare the land on the edges of our big cities. His study entitled “Confini”, meaning “Borderlines”, focuses on the Rho area northwest of Milan, the site of the new trade fair district that will host Expo 2015: a land that is undergoing major change with important social repercussions. Here, the image object is a document, a reproduction of reality that both attracts and disconcerts viewers, bringing them into contact with their own ethics and posing visual questions which demand a response. His images do not turn the eye away, but put it in focus, drawing our attention to the lines, fragments and details of the history of the local area that has been interrupted to give way to the future by placing them in the centre of the composition. Thus the author casts light on the area and how it has changed, crudely underlining that which remains. The study focuses primarily on time, in all its brutal beauty, because time does not stop, not even for the instant in which the photograph is taken. Thomas Pagani therefore expresses through his photographs the three components that make up the image: the past, which always leaves a trace, the present, shown as reality, and the future, which will soon also be dissolved in new borderlines.   Paolo Schianchi   http://www.thomaspagani.com
