Zaha Hadid: Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku

The Heydar Aliyev Center in new Baku is one of Zaha Hadid’s boldest and most amazing projects. It makes a strong mark on the city and optimises use of the vast size and great complexity of its site, a hill in the urban area of the capital of Azerbaijan. The plastic form of a building designed to be photographed is silhouetted at the top of the hill. The materials used to make the panels covering the building also become the pavement of the plaza outside it, creating semi-public spaces where people can stop and enjoy their city.

Ala Architects: Kilden Performing Arts Centre in Norway

In Kristiansand, Norway, Finnish architectural studio Ala Architects has built an arts centre containing a large concert hall and a theatre. The history of the project, which began in the ’80s, led to construction of a landmark of great symbolic value; the Kilden has a sculptural shape somewhere between art and architecture, overlooking the city’s waterfront, and its design and use of materials are derived from local history.

Halo Architects: Sami Cultural Centre in Inari (Finland)

An expression of the Sami people, the cultural centre in Inari, Finland, designed by Halo Architects, has an organic shape that fits into the landscape with respect. This contemporary work of architecture is adapted to the landscape thanks to a layout of complex design which takes into account the presence of the old trees and the glass façade with handcrafted wooden cladding.

3XN architects: Plassen Cultural Center in Norway

Winner of the competition on invitation for the new cultural centre in central Molde, Norway, Danish studio 3XN interprets the building as a city square, using the same materials on the walls as on the outdoor paving. The work demonstrates continuity with its context and with the most recent developments in architecture.

Landscaping for the community. Rommen School and Cultural Center.

To add the finishing touches to the school in Rommen, a suburb of Oslo, Norwegian architects, Østengen & Bergo AS designed the outdoor spaces, revamping the facility to turn it into an extension for the local community.
