At the end of March the MCA or Museum of Contemporary Art reopened in Sydney following an expansion by architect Sam Marshall.

The expansion of the Sydney Museum of Contemporary Art was intended to provide the museum with new public services and increase its total surface area by 50% with multimedia halls, laboratories for practical activities and digital studios. The project was implemented by architect Sam Marshall in collaboration with the technicians of the New South Wales Government Architect’s Office, a special government office.

Spectacular views of the Sydney harbour and the Opera House designed by Jørn Utzon can be had from the terrace of the new café and the big halls for private events built above the volume of the existing building.

Energy-saving LED lighting, collection of rainwater and a heat exchange system with seawater are only a few of the solutions the architects have adopted to ensure the environmental sustainability that will make the MCA an example of a sustainable museum which may be copied in other similar projects in Australia.
