The PIAM Premio Internacional de Arquitectura Matimex award presented by MAE, the Matimex showroom, offers our inspiration for this week’s edition of “best of the week”: hotels built in various parts of the world.
We begin our list with the “Slow Horse” hotel designed by Italian architectural studio Elasticospa, transforming a building from the '70s into a sustainable construction that interacts with its natural surroundings.
We then continue with a number of experimental projects such as Zaha Hadid’s City of Dreams hotel in Macao and Gecekondu, a nomad hotel built in a night by DUS Architects. The theme of the nomad hotel is also addressed by Hypercubus, project by Austrian studio wg3. Actescollectifs designed a hotel 2112 metres above sea level in the Swiss Alps, accessible only on foot, on skis or with a snowmobile. At the other extreme, in the heat of the French Antilles, Luis Pons Design Lab came up with a restyling project for the Guanahani Hotel & SPA, and in the deep south of the world the Hotel Awasi Patagonia is represented in photographs by Fernando Alda.
