The new Falkensteiner Hotel Montafon is a 5-star resort among the woods and mountain slopes of Montafon, a protected area in Austria. The architectural project by Snøhetta of Norway is complemented with interior design by Italian studio Vudafieri-Saverino Partners, who draw their inspiration from the traditions, colours and atmospheres of the Alps.

The colours and atmospheres of the Alpine landscape inspire the interior design of the 5-star Falkensteiner Hotel Montafon

Capturing the spirit and the essence of the place and paying tribute to local construction traditions are the key concepts inspiring the architecture and interior design of the Falkensteiner Hotel Montafon, a “5-star family active hotel” among the woods and mountain slopes of Montafon, a protected area in Austria. The architecture and landscape design by Norwegian studio Snøhetta take advantage of the topography of the site to create a structure set into the mountain slope which takes the form of two connected buildings. The two buildings look like wings on either side of a central core containing common areas on four levels. All of the resort’s 123 rooms on the two upper levels enjoy panoramic views over the landscape.

The interior architecture and interior decoration of all the spaces are by Vudafieri-Saverino Partners. Italian architects Claudio Saverino and Tiziano Vudafieri began by studying the rural Alpine landscape and traditional elements of local buildings, reinterpreted with a contemporary twist. A number of typical elements of this landscape marked by the human presence, such as fences made of intertwined branches or the wooden slats of the barns, become decorative elements in the interior. In the same way, the choice of materials revolves around use of stone, fir and larch wood, recalling vernacular constructions such as Montafoner Häus, an archetype of the local construction style. The choice of colours is also inspired by nature, becoming a key to the interior design. The architects’ colour palette reflects the colours of the farms and the mountains at different times of year and differentiates the spaces: the common areas feature hues of spring and summer, combining a bright meadow green and a delicate watery blue with larch and fir, while warm autumnal hues of red, orange and yellow, also combined with larch wood, define the colour palette of the rooms and suites in the resort.
