Opening of the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) Five years since it was designed by architecture firms UNStudio and DP Architects, the new East Coast Campus of the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) has opened. An exemplary building for inter-disciplinary and collaborative learning.

DP Architects, known to our readers for their large-scale projects with marked sustainability in Singapore worked with UN Studio to design the new East Coast Campus of the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). This is Singapore's most recent public-funded university. It was established in collaboration with MIT and reflects the new pedagogical models of inter-disciplinary and collaborative learning.

SUTD focuses on architecture and sustainable design, on product development, engineering systems and design and information technology and design. These concepts are also reflected in the actual architecture that emphasises passive building solutions: the geometry of the buildings are designed to foster wind flow for outdoor comfort and tree-lined shaded walkways are a key part of the landscaping, also helping to cool the buildings and to keep the carbon footprint low.

Native plants that consume little water abound throughout the campus, on the green roofs and hanging gardens, also setting the scene for a pleasure-filled learning environment.

The layout of the SUTD designed by DP Architects and UN Studio links the different faculties with connecting and shared spaces and places, to encourage interaction and sharing between disciplines.
In the words of Jeremy Tan, director of DP Architects: “We believe that interaction is the key to a progressive educational model”.
