“Tasting the Landcape” is the theme of this year's IFLA World Congress, organised by the Italian association of landscape architecture (AIAPP), which represents IFLA in Italy, with the City of Turin. The accent is on the outer suburban areas - the city edges merging into the countryside - where so many of the challenges of sustainability for new millennium cities are played out. An opportunity to explore and swap notes on the role of the landscape architect in the processes of qualification and regeneration of places and territories, which is what was showcased by landscape architect, Federica Cornalba in the Pecha Kucha section.

The Novara-based designer presented her design of an Arboreal Biodiversity Plan for the renewal of the green areas pertaining to a pharmaceutical facility. Starting from the special geographic position next to the Parco Naturale del Ticino nature reserve and from a thorough exploration of the local plant life, Federica Cornalba proposes a project that combines redeveloping the wetlands, rural hedges and rows of trees typical of the zone as important habitats for the fauna, in a compatible garden and referencing the colours of the brand and the nearby urban environment.

Another theme of the 21 April session was “Landscape & Media”, or communicating landscape architecture. A favourite topic for Floornature and Livegreenblog, as we stressed in the International Forum where we met magazine and blog editors. The talk was moderated by Robert Schäfer, founder of TOPOS magazine. We discussed the relationship between applied creativity, space and green, in other words the landscape as an element in construction of the space and of beauty. A synergy between creativity and landscape design that can comprehend the dynamics of the new post-web surface: designing in a virtual space made concrete in the unpredictability of nature.

Of course, we couldn't help mentioning our studies in my geographical other, i.e. trying to work out who we are communicating with, since we believe it is ethical to pass on information that can be shared and open to dialogue. Basically, news that we might call ecological in terms of respecting human nature.
