Anne-Sophie Poirier presents an essential, striking new interior design project. After her interior design for Slowpoke Espresso was shortlisted for the Australian Interior Design Awards 2012, the designer created the interior design for “By Josephine”, a specialist café and bakery in Melbourne. A project as delicate as the exquisite handmade French sweets.

Anne-Sophie Poirier (aka sasufi) has created a special atmosphere for customers to savour the delicious traditional French “macarons”, now also popular in Melbourne, Australia Australia.
The store owner, Josephine who makes these delights comes from France, like the designer and together they came up with a classic, boutique feel that provides the perfect backdrop for the pastry-making craft.

Josephine makes these macarons using prime ingredients, and along the same lines, the simple, clean interior design winks at French “savoir vivre” and adds a dash of nostalgia.

Essential materials and colours are used: the dark porcelain stoneware floor provides a sense of contrast with white walls, the same colour used for the fixtures and fittings. The only coloured wall here – aubergine – features a vintage collection of porcelain plates, referencing both the boutique’s logo and the typical gilt lettering of French history.

Still, the real stars are the small, colourful sweets on show in the display cabinet, their round shape encompassing a whole world to discover, just like Sasufi’s project is an invitation to give yourself over to the rediscovery of clean, crisp design that can create a welcoming atmosphere for an unexpectedly peaceful moment.
