2015 CAE Education Facility Design Awards Nine buildings were selected by the Committee on Architecture for Education (CAE) of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) for the 2015 Education Facility Design Awards.

It is a well-known fact that architecture is important for the psychological and physical wellbeing of users, even more so when it comes to education facilities, so schools, colleges and kindergartens. Children and young adults spend a lot of time there and they are particularly sensitive to their built environment.

Which is why The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has its own Committee on Architecture for Education, the CAE, which selects the most outstanding designs of school and/or university buildings in terms of their architecture and also on how the project can further the client's mission, goals and educational programme.

Nine education facilities were selected for the CAE Education Facility Design Awards 2015. Four received Awards of Excellence: Berklee Tower | Berklee College of Music, Boston, designed by William Rawn Associates, Architects, Inc.; Health Sciences Education Building (HSEB), University of Arizona & Northern Arizona University, Phoenix, Arizona, designed by CO Architects with Ayers Saint Gross; University Center, The New School in New York City, designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP with SLCE Architects and Vashon Island High School, Vashon Island, Washington designed by Integrus Architecture.

Carl Sandburg Elementary School in Kirkland, Washington, designed by NAC|Architecture won an Award of Merit, along with Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta designed by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson and Reed College Performing Arts Building, Portland, Oregon, designed by Opsis Architecture LLP, which have already been a guest on our blog.

The Walter Taylor Award went to e3 Civic High School, San Diego designed by LPA, Inc. and the delightful Nueva School at Bay Meadows San Mateo, California designed by Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects is the recipient of the Shirley Cooper Award.
So, the CAE awards projects that seek to bring together the close ties between teaching, learning and built environment, with a keen eye on best practices. Because architecture does not just shape our world, it also shapes its users!
