THE TOKYO TOILET is an initiative of the Nippon Foundation, the government of the town of Shibuya and the Tourism Association of Shibuya which began in 2019; this year saw the addition of two new public toilets, the most recent of which was designed by Kengo Kuma.

On May 22 a new contemporary art museum opened in Paris, the new permanent home of the Pinault Collection in the eighteenth-century Bourse de Commerce building. As in the restoration of Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana in Venice, the collection’s other permanent location, the transformation and restoration of the old building was entrusted to Japanese architect Tadao Ando.

Tadao Ando designs He Art Museum HEM in the Shunde District in Guangdong, China

On October 1, the new museum designed by Tadao Ando in the Shunde District in Guangdong province, China opened its doors to the public. For his design, the architect was inspired by ancient Chinese cosmology and by the water pavilions typical of the Lingnan area, yet, as the architect says, based on the western style’s use of light. The museum houses the art collection of the He family, consisting of works of international contemporary art, along with works of modern and contemporary Chinese art.

THE TOKYO TOILET, starchitects for public conveniences in Shibuya

THE TOKYO TOILET is an initiative, organized by the non-profit Nippon Foundation, the Shibuya City Government and the Shibuya Tourism Association to provide locals and tourists with clean, safe, attractive and accessible public toilets. They hooked up with 16 big names in architecture and design, including four Pritzker Prize-winners, Shigeru Ban, Toyo Ito, Tadao Ando and Fumihiko Maki.
