With vernacular reminiscences and a very specific identity arising out of the construction’s relationship with its existing natural surroundings, the school is a passive building based on local know-how.

In Senegal, the Spanish firm IDOM has designed an extension for Alioune Diop University, drawing inspiration from the natural surroundings and using conventional low-energy construction techniques and bioclimatic strategies. The project was selected among the finalists of the 2019 edition of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture and has recently won the 2019 COAVN Award in the category Arquitectura y Urbanismo Extraterritorial.
