GAN-Physarum: ecoLogicStudio explains how a kind of mould can create whole cities

Marco Poletto and Claudia Pasquero - architects, designers and innovators, as well as co-founders of ecoLogicStudio - have curated a section of the ‘Réseaux-Mondes’ exhibition now on at the Centre Pompidou in Paris until 25 April 2022. They have dubbed their project ‘GAN-Physarum: la dérive numérique’, and it demonstrates how, thanks to the wonders of machine learning, a form of slime can effectively underpin the future vision of a bio-digital, ecological and energy-autonomous Paris.

Striatus - an arched 3D-concrete-printed bridge in Venice

On the occasion of the Venice Architecture Biennale, an arched bridge printed in 3D concrete – the first of its kind – was installed and inaugurated at the Giardini della Marinaressa, in Venice. The project was developed by ETH Zürich's Block Research Group in collaboration with the Zaha Hadid Architects Computation and Design Group (ZHACODE), division of the architecture firm with the same name, and with Incremental3D (in3D). Moreover, the project and was made possible thanks to the two-component concrete developed by Holcim.

DROO Architecture revisits the classic London bow window with VI Castle Lane

In the heart of London, between Buckingham Palace and Westminster, British firm DROO Architecture - headed up by architects Michel da Costa Gonçalves and Amrita Mahindroo - has revisited an iconic element of English architecture: the bow window. With residential project VI Castle Lane, the architects have managed to insert a building that openly declares its modernity into a historical and protected context. In doing so, they have garnered the Architecture MasterPrize 2020 for the Residential Architecture - Multi Unit category.

Tallinn Architecture Biennale (TAB 2022) - Curatorial finalists

The Estonian Centre for Architecture has announced the list of the five finalist curatorial teams of the 6th edition of the Tallinn International Architecture Biennial - TAB 2022. Competitors had been asked to propose an innovative theme linked to Estonia’s context and relevant to the world of contemporary architecture. Among the finalists, we were favourably impressed by the theme presented by the “Emotionalism” team, rooted in the idea that today an increasingly driven digitisation is devaluing “humanity”. Their Biennale will therefore be focused on uncovering new ideas and proposals, through design, that reaffirm the centrality of what makes us human.
