Aspiring to transparency by pivoting away from the past
It immediately stands out from the dense building curtain first and foremost because it allows room to breathe. The single-family home dubbed Casa 1616 in Barcelona interrupts the rhythm of the standard vertical view. Its façades, both front and rear, offer a rare glimpse into a permeable internal development, with the weighting of the various functions turned on its head.

IAAC builds FLORA, an observatory in the Barcelona forest
FLORA, an acronym for Forest Lab for Observational Research and Analysis, is a facility in the Collserola Natural Park (Barcelona) developed by a team of students and researchers from IAAC's Master’s in Advanced Ecological Buildings and Biocities (MAEBB). Built from sustainable, locally-sourced materials, it allows researchers to monitor the forest from within.

External Reference presents Escaleras y Mirador Vela
"Escaleras y Mirador Vela" is a new project by Carmelo Zappulla’s architectural practice External Reference connecting Passeig del Mare Nostrum with Plaça de la Rosa dels Vents on the Barceloneta waterfront. The project presents an architectural façade accessible via a stairway and a raised waterfront promenade 9.30 metres above the ground.

Recent projects by Benedetta Tagliabue - EMBT Architects at The Architects Series

Peris+Toral Arquitectes, beautiful and affordable housing
The Peris+Toral Arquitectes studio has created a five-storey building with 54 social housing units in Barcelona, in the Bon Pastor district. An architecture that offers housing that is not only affordable, but also beautiful and sustainable. In fact, the project was shortlisted for the FAD Award for Architecture 2022 and received a special mention in the HISPALYT Architecture Awards 2022.

Vitaliy Vorobey Flatness, a public space in Barcelona
Ukrainian architect Vitaliy Vorobey designed a public space for Barcelona’s green area inspired by the multicultural identity of this Catalonian city, which the architect experiences as imbued with the spirit of creative freedom, a place where everyone can find their purpose in life. He draws inspiration from this idea to come up with a project he describes with the slogan ““For all of us”.

Wood to reinterpret the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion
'Mass is More’ is an installation designed by the Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) and Bauhaus Earth, bringing the innovation of solid wood construction to the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona. The project establishes a dialogue between the industrial modernity of the 20th century and the new low-emission buildings of the 21st century.

TOVA 3D printed house in local earth by IAAC
The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) presents Spain's first 3D printed building using earth. The building, constructed using a Crane WASP – the architectural 3D printer – illustrates new ways of addressing the social and environmental challenges of the future through the IAAC’s various education and research programs.
