Materials and light are the key ingredients used by the Ukrainian studio YOD Design Lab in the restyling of the historic Odessa Restaurant in Kiev. The space tells the story of the city of Odessa, bringing its atmosphere back to life in a contemporary version in this restaurant named after the famous Black Sea resort.

“Odessa” Restaurant: Storytelling by YOD Design Lab

Aiming to recreate not only the atmosphere of the famous Black Sea resort, but a cosy space in line with the latest new dining trends, the designers of YOD Design Lab opted for design solutions that use materials to represent the history of Odessa, from the traditional local stone of the Crimea in the entrance corridor to the shelves full of food recalling the famous Privoz Market and booths covered with old maps of the city printed on metal foil.

The main hall features a sort of “lounge island”: the effect created by 30 km of rope forms a room with permeable walls and ceiling, from which hang pulleys on which the lights are hung, a reference to Odessa’s seagoing history.
The designers of YOD Design Lab have come up with a project that does not look back on the past with nostalgia, but comes up with a creative response to today’s need for conviviality.
