MVRDV wins design competition with Beam

The competition for urban redevelopment of Villeneuve d'Ascq, near Lille in northern France, has been won by the architectural studio MVRDV and the studios ADIM Nord and Alzua+ with their Beam project.
The key idea behind the project is creation of a building of great urban value which would become a visual landmark in the city. In terms of urban planning, the project constitutes a form of sustainable development for the city centre, as the parking spaces in the main square will be moved underground to create pedestrian zones and links with existing green areas.

The main building, designed by the architects of MVRDV, consists of an overhanging volume extending out over the motorway in an area formerly occupied by a service station. Construction is scheduled to start in 2015.
