Freespace 16th International Architecture Exhibition Venice 2018

On 7th June 2017 the dates of the Venice architecture biennale were announced. It will take place from 26th May to 25th November 2018 with an opening at the Gardens on 24th and 25th May and will be curated by architects Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara.

Freespace is the title of the16th International Architecture Exhibition, a single word that has a range of meanings. Architects Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara have clarified in several ways what they mean by “freespace”. The general invitation is to try to look between the cracks of architecture for those spaces that are not designed, or rather do not appear to be planned, but which are perfect for undefined uses and unexpressed desires.
Freespace invites us to re-examine our way of thinking, stimulating new ways of seeing the world and inventing solutions in which architecture provides wellbeing and dignity for every inhabitant on this fragile planet”( Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara).

Some examples cited by the architects have clarified the meaning of Freespace , like the concrete bench covered by tiles at the entrance of Can Lis, Mallorca, designed by Jørn Utzon, modelled on the human body and a greeting and welcome to those who enter. Or the Museum of Modern Art in Sao Paulo that architect Lina Bo Bardi has designed raised from the ground to provide a viewpoint over the city.
