Fosbury Architecture to lead the Italian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale of Architecture 2023

The selection process to entrust the curatorship of the Italian Pavilion at La Biennale di Venezia for the 18th International Architecture Exhibition “The Workshop of the Future” curated by Lesley Lokko has come to an end. Culture Minister Dario Franceschini chose to assign the task to the Fosbury Architecture collective. This decision was taken after reviewing the trio of proposals submitted by Onofrio Cutaia, Director General and Commissioner of the Italian Pavilion. Indeed, the Directorate General for Contemporary Creativity had asked the ten curators selected for the first invitation-only phase to address current and pressing issues in contemporary society, exploring them through the transversality and interdisciplinary nature of contemporary architectural languages and presenting them through Italian experiences and research with an innovative and experimental approach.

Founded in Milan in 2013 by the architects Giacomo Ardesio, Alessandro Bonizzoni, Nicola Campri, Claudia Mainardi and Veronica Caprino; Fosbury Architecture focuses on design and research, and has curated several exhibitions in Italy and abroad, including the monographic exhibition Characters at the Magazin Gallery in Vienna (2022), Milan 2030 at the Triennale Milano (2019) as well as the exhibitions and the design of the Urban Center in Prato at the Centro Pecci (2021/2022) of which we present some images on this page.
The collective has participated in major international and national events such as the Architecture Biennials of Lisbon (2019), Versailles (2019), Chicago (2017) and Venice (2016). The collective's works have been exhibited at: Take Your Seat promoted by the ADI Design Museum in Milan; The State of the Art of Architecture at the Triennale Milano;Re-Constructivist Architecture at the RIBA Gallery in London; Adhocracy at the Onassis Centre in Athens; and Mean Home at the British School in Rome. For the design of the exhibition Verde Prato (2019), staged at the Centro Pecci and to which some of the images here refer, the collective received a mention in the TYoung 2021 Award. For “Incompiuto, La Nascita di uno Stile” (Unfinished, The Birth of a Style) (2018) a publication curated with Alterazioni Video and supported by MIBACT (the current Ministry of Culture), it received an honourable mention in the Compasso d’Oro 2020.
The choice of a young collective of under-35s was, for the Minister of Culture, Dario Franceschini, an important first response to the theme “The Workshop of the Future” of the 18th International Architecture Exhibition, of the Biennale di Venezia, which will take place from 20 May to 26 November 2023 in the Giardini and Arsenale venues, as well as other locations in the city. The Italian Pavilion has been housed in the Tese delle Vergini in the Arsenale for the past sixteen years, and covers an area of 1,200 square metres, plus 900 square metres of outdoor space.
