Diller Scofidio + Renfro for MoMA in New York

Work is due to start on renovation of MoMA in New York in the summer of 2014. Diller Scofidio + Renfro have been asked to come up with a masterplan combining new constructions with the existing spaces to improve public accessibility and allow MoMA to reorganise the way it presents its collections and exhibitions.

The project will permit inclusion in the museum of three floors in a newly built tower on the site of the former American Folk Art Museum, designed by Tod Williams and Billie Tsien Architects thirteen years ago and slated for demolition.

The plan for expansion of MoMA is complicated because it must combine spaces built on different scales and deal with a complex series of galleries and public spaces. The architects proposed expansion of the existing entrance to include free access to The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden and construction of a new glassed-in contemporary art gallery. The project will result in a 30% increase in total exhibition space.
