Make City in Berlin, Festival for Architecture and Urban Alternatives In its inaugural year, Make City - the Festival for Architecture and Urban Alternatives in Berlin based on the theme “Re_sourcing the Urban” aims to explore cooperation and engagement of citizens, focusing in particular on the free spaces, or urban commons. An alternative take on architecture.

Make City in Berlin - 17 days of architecture and urban planning events - the “Festival for Architecture and Urban Alternatives” is being held from 11 to 28 June and features Studio Talks, guided tours (Make City Open), exhibitions and events (Urban Hubs) to engage citizens and make them more aware of their city and of the dynamics of design and urban planning that shape our living space. Just one more example of how the idea of active participation and involvement of the people in community design processes is becoming more and more popular!

For Make City, the festival organised by Make Shift with the architects' association in Berlin, the city is being turned into one big workshop of “makers”. There are three key themes: Urban Commons, Urban Open Source and Working & Living, with a whopping 140 events being held in 85 different locations, to engage the whole city.

The programme stresses the importance of integrating communication and urban research in order to find sustainable, complete responses to contemporary challenges. So, "making" is collaborating and sharing to come up with new options for managing and using green spaces like urban vegetable gardens or co-working and even co-living spaces.

The Make City festival in Berlin will be ending on 27 and 28 June, the weekend dedicated to “Architecture Day” across the whole of Germany, obviously being celebrated in the capital as well, and offering the possibility to visit some of the highlights of the Berlin architectural scene.
