MAB – Media Architecture Biennale 2014, Aarhus Denmark With the “World Cities” theme, the Media Architecture Biennale (MAB) 2014 in Aarhus, Denmark explored the increasingly important aspect of “media architecture”, i.e. the digital “layer” that extends across our third millennium cities.

The Media Architecture Biennale is an initiative that was organised for the first time by Austrian political expert Gernot Tscherteu in 2006, with the purpose not only of showcasing examples of architecture linked to technology, but also to bring together some great minds to create the future of our world. A world where images becomes object and where communication, and as a result technological media play a key role.

This year, more than 80 projects by artists, designers and architects were displayed. Projects spanning a range of fields: from urban planning to branding, from lighting design to actual architecture.

The five projects selected by the international jury include a power plant in Denmark that turns into a glowing landmark; huge 3D selfies at the Sochi winter Olympics; a Korean artwork, phantoms of light; 80,000 LEDs allowing the people of Copenhagen to interact directly; and a completely new look at public transport in Nairobi, Kenya.

The next Media Architecture Biennale in 2016 will be taking place in Sydney, Australia.
