Human Exhibition by Antony Gormley at Forte di Belvedere, Florence There is still time to visit the exhibition “Human” by sculptor Antony Gormley on show at Forte di Belvedere in Florence until 27th September. More than one hundred pieces by Gormley are displayed both inside and outside the sixteenth-century fortress which also boasts spectacular views of the city of Florence and its surrounding hills.

An extraordinarily beautiful architectonic setting for the exhibition Human by London-born sculptor Antony Gormley: the Forte di Belvedere in Florence, reopened to the public in 2013, has since become renowned for monumental sculpture exhibitions.

Amongst the works on display is the famous installation Critical Mass, an “anti-monument to commemorate all the victims in the XX century”. This piece was originally created by Antony Gormley in 1995 as a point of reflection on a dark passage in German history. Now, positioned on the lower terrace of  Forte di Belvedere, Florence, Critical Mass gains new significance regarding the Renaissance city, the history of mankind and the continuous and ever-present relationship between money, political power and the military.

The more naturalistic figures of Critical Mass, made from casts moulded directly from the artist's body, are installed in conjunction with his recent works known as Blockworks, which create a dialogue between human anatomy and architectonic volumes. Each sculpture is significantly positioned in such a way that connects with the structure of the fort.

Human updates and confirms the determination of the city of Florence to promote contemporary culture in a compelling attempt at interaction between Renaissance Florence and the modern city and an intimate exchange between sculpture and a new conception of the anthropic environment.  Gormley is the right artist for expressing these ideas since he is continuously trying to define the space of art as a place where new behaviour, thoughts and sentiments can come into focus.
