Deutscher Architekturpreis 2013 awards sustainability.
This biennial German architecture award lays the emphasis on seeking sustainability in contemporary design. Many projects for adapting and moderning existing buildings received awards.

The Deutscher Architekturpreis 2013 prize was awarded to the Museum of Art in Ravensburg by Lederer, Ragnarsdóttir and Oei – the firm of architects that made this the first museum in the world to be designed as a passive building.

The building is located in the historical centre and the architects approached the design based on its location in the township, using recycled bricks for the exterior. It is home to Peter and Gudrun Selinka’s collections of art, centred on expressionism.
The building has drastically reduced the museum’s running costs, at the same time boosting the image of Ravensburg.

Some of the works mentioned comprise: residential projects of energy restructuring in line with contemporary architecture trends; restored historical buildings to improve their environmental performance and usability; a bus stop in the university campus of Regensburg.

In this award, sustainability not only focuses on the building itself, but is also extended to infrastructures.
