Promoting art by occupying urban spaces normally set aside for publicity is not a new idea – we’ve seen it already in initiatives like Brandalism in England, which uses art to take back the street as a place of communication belonging to the community.

The Art By Chance Ultra Short Film Festival also uses public places to screen films submitted by artists and filmmakers from all over the world. The Festival was established in 2009 by Hatice Caglar and Yener Ozgur Ozaydin and is based in Istanbul, Turkey: this year’s theme for the selected films is “Discover”.

Wherever you are between 15 January and 15 February (you can see the full list of screening locations on the Festival website), you can treat yourself to front row seats to watch the screening of previews, shards of creativity that break up the routine of everyday life of passersby – in airports, in stations, in shopping centres, in offices.

A great way to stir up interest in art and beauty, no longer locked away in museums but right out there for everyone to see, consistent with our global, connected world.

You can follow the initiative and discuss it in social media using the hashtags #ArtByChance #ChanceDiscoveries, and the general public can even vote for their favourite film (http://discoverartbychance.com/).
