The winners of the AIA New York Design Awards 2022

On January 10, the winners of the annual AIA New York Design Awards were announced, the annual awards handed out by the oldest and largest chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The AIA New York, in fact, was founded in 1857 and includes more than 5500 practicing architects, associated professionals, students and public members dedicated to architecture and design. The Design Awards are given out annually in recognition of works created around the world by New York-based architects, as well as of works created in the state of New York by designers with offices in other parts of the world. The winning projects are selected by an independent jury of architects, teachers and designers from outside the city. The candidate works range from temporary installations to buildings, from exhibitions to large-scale urban interventions and the awards are conferred in four categories: Architecture, Interiors, Projects, Urban Design. The jury awards the titles of "Honour", "Merit" or "Citation", selecting the winners based on several factors. These include the quality of the design, the response to its context and to the local community and the technical solutions adopted. Moreover, the jury also assesses whether the project is adequate and congruent to the programme for which it was created and if it is innovative. For the 2022 edition, 15 out of the 25 winning projects were carried out in the State of New York, while 6 projects consist of international works completed in China, Germany, Haiti, India and Taiwan.

Browsing the list of winners, we rediscover two projects presented in Floornature's pages in 2021, selected in the Design Awards 2022 Architecture category. The 9 works that received the Honour recognition include the Moynihan Train Hall project designed by the Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) architecture studio, dubbed as one of the most monumental civic projects undertaken in New York City over the span of a generation. The intervention, completed in the historic James A. Farley post office building has, in fact, changed the way millions of people interact with the city every day. Evoking the majesty of the original Penn Station, the architects were able to breathe new life into an important structure of New York's rich architectural heritage.

Another project which our readers are familiar with, the 512 GW Townhouse designed by the Archi-Tectonics studio ran by architect Winka Dubbeldam, instead received a "Citation" in the Architecture category, thanks to its innovative façade that is able to meet multiple conditions. The project involved a former industrial warehouse in New York's popular Soho district. The building has been transformed into a residential tower, with the addition of four new floors and a special "climatic" skin, an innovative 3D envelope that envelops the building and, just like human skin, helps regulate the temperature of the interior spaces.

From April 14 to June 11 of this year, the Centre for Architecture in New York will host an exhibition dedicated to the winning projects.
