UNStudio Xintiandi Installation, Shanghai

A ribbon about 30 metres long bounds interrupts pedestrians’ path and sucks them up into a mirror game in the installation designed by UNStudio in Shanghai, inaugurated in March 2014 for Shanghai Fashion Week.
The project was implemented as part of the “RIBA Shanghai Windows Project 2014” programme: 10 Architects from RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architect) designed installations for ten international fashion brands.
The installation designed by architect Ben van Berkel with UNStudio frames the entrance to the Xintiandi Style Retail Mall.
Ben van Berkel explained the concept behind the design: linking the installation with the culture of consumption.
Not only consumption of products, but consumption of images too.
Images of the city, of the environment and of people; images like those reflecting the architectural installation designed by UNStudio.
