Atelier Tsuyoshi Tane: Hirosaki Museum of Contemporary Art
The municipality of Hirosaki decided to open a new contemporary art museum in its former cider and saké distilleries. Following a PFI competition (Private Finance Initiative), the project was awarded to Atelier Tsuyoshi Tane Architects, which has completed a painstaking reclamation of the brick structures.

Keiji Ashizawa: home in the centre of Tokyo surrounded by greenery
Contemporary Japanese architecture has its own distinctive features. One of these is integration of the built and natural environments: the form of a building is closely connected with the form of the vegetation around it. One very interesting case of contemporary Japanese architecture is the home of a collector in central Tokyo by Keiji Ashizawa Design.

Ogawa: nature and architecture in the house with trees in Kagawa
Young architect Hironaka Ogawa has designed an expansion for a home in his city, Kagawa in Japan, with two big trees in the centre which are a part of the historic heritage of the site on which the home stands. The home is a sanctuary of memories dedicated to the trees, which were cut down to build the expansion but incorporated in the construction, exactly in their original places but inside the new building, to guard the spirit of the place.
