Sections of Autonomy. Six Korean Architects exhibition in Rome

Projects by six of Korea’s most important architects: Choi Moon-gyu (Ga.A Architects), Jang Yoon-gyoo  (Unsangdong Architects Cooperation), Kim Jong-kyu (M.A.R.U.), Kim Jun-sung (Architecture Studio hANd), Kim Seung-hoy ( KYWC Architects), and Kim Young-joon (YO2 Architects), were selected by curators Choi Won-joon and Luca Galofaro to illustrate contemporary Korean architecture in the exhibition: "Sections of Autonomy. Six Korean Architects" which opened on February 3, 2017 at Fondazione Pastificio Cerere in Rome.

Choi Won-joon, an associate professor at Soongsil University in Seoul, is a member of the Mokchon Architecture Archive research team, which is constructing an archive of Korean architecture. The curator explained how the selected architects represent the first generation of Korean architects not conditioned by ideological pressure, free to express their autonomy and individuality. Hence the exhibition title: "Sections of Autonomy. Six Korean Architects". These are architects who began their careers in the late 90s and early 2000s, and their education, work and teaching careers have brought them into direct contact with important architects all over the world, from Toyo Ito to OMA.

The selected works are presented as fragments of urban structures, with the intention of reproducing the complexity and vivacity of the Korean metropolis. The installation by LGSMA divides the exhibition into a number of halls: the first contains an introduction by curator Choi Won-joon, followed by six theme islands dedicated to different architects and a final hall containing an installation about Korea on sheets of glass.
