SAOTA and AA KIRNA, housing project in Surat
In collaboration with AA KIRNA Architects and Associates of India, architect Stefan Antoni, SAOTA, presented a plan for three homes in Surat in India, on the left bank of the Tapti River 306 km south of Gandhinagar. The tropical monsoon climate, though largely moderated by the action of the Arabian Sea, guided the architects? choices and the design of a number of elements including the wooden roofs and sunscreens. The three projects were built in accordance with the canons of contemporary living, but with a strong focus on the clients? lifestyles and traditional Indian architecture. In House C, for example, the architects resorted to alignment of the key elements, five in the oriental tradition (Earth, Water, Air, Fire and Space), in accordance with traditional Indian architecture which considers the “home” a "temple of man".
